Ms. Janet C. McKenzie is an Assistant Commissioner of Police in the Royal Bahamas Police Force. On December 11, 2023, she became the 7th woman in the history of the RBPF to attain the office of Assistant Commissioner of Police. She has over 30 years of policing experience. Her diverse experiences include but are not limited to operational, leadership, training, risk management, and administrative management positions.

Presently, her portfolio of responsibility includes the Human Resources Department; all Civilian Personnel within the organization; the Domestic Violence Unit; the Ministry of National Security Police Personnel, Police Staff Association Personnel, the Allerdyce Strachan Police Day Care Centre; the Police Force Insurance Office; and the New Providence District Headquarters.

Assistant Commissioner McKenzie leads over 200 persons in her portfolio and is the Chief Human Resource Officer for over 3,000 police officers, police reserves, and police civilian staff, ensuring the proper delivery and implementation of performance management, career planning, learning and development, compensation and benefits, accurately tracking, updating, and protecting employee records. Also under her remit is the employee assistant program that is responsible for liaising and coordinating with the insurance company to ensure employees and/or their families are afforded the benefits they are entitled to during health challenges and in the case of death.

Assistant Commissioner McKenzie most recently served as the Officer-in-Charge of the Western Division and commanded with evidence-based policing. The Western Division covers the historic villages of Gambier and Adelaide. It is also the home of several open and gated communities and commercial and tourist areas.

ACP McKenzie is a Major Event Security Expert. She strategized, provided direction for, and coordinated with international, regional, and local law enforcement agencies to execute successful high-level security of world leaders who visited The Bahamas from the Caribbean, Africa, China, The United Kingdom, The United Arab Emirates, and the United States of America. That included the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (William and Kate), Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau, the Vice President of the United States of America, Kamala Harris, Prime Ministers Mia Motely of Barbados, Andrew Holness of Jamaica, and thirteen (13) other Prime Ministers and Ministers throughout the Caribbean region.

She also served as the first female Commander of the Northwestern Division. The Northwestern Division includes three stations: Nassau Street, Fort Charlotte & Arawak Cay Police Stations. Northwestern Division encompasses the inner city of Bain & Grants Town, two major tourist areas of Arawak Cay, and the Pointe Hotel, where she led a team of over 80 officers, including Police Reserves.

Assistant Commissioner McKenzie also served as the Officer-in-Charge and 2nd In-Charge Officer-in-Charge of the Southern (Quakoo Station) Policing Division. Southern Division contains the inner cities of Bain & Grants Town and several commercial areas.

ACP McKenzie is the former Strategic Policy, Planning & Research Branch Director. In this directorship, she was responsible for crime analysis, statistical data, research, organizational development, and Geographical Information System (GIS) crime mapping for the Royal Bahamas Police.

ACP McKenzie launched the Victim Support Unit in 2007, which was established to offer free and confidential support for victims of any crime. The forms of support include crisis intervention, emotional support, counselling, and case update information.

Assistant Commissioner McKenzie is trained in law enforcement, gender-based violence prevention and investigation, investigative, public service, and organizational effectiveness. ACP McKenzie received law enforcement training in the United States, Canada, Central America, and the Caribbean.

Over the years, ACP McKenzie spent countless hours in the training and development capacity, empowering others within and outside the organization. She has trained hundreds of police officers, from the recruits as a squad instructor to those in senior command. Assistant Commissioner McKenzie relishes these opportunities and recognizes that training and development are vital to progress and productivity in any organization. She is a ‘systems thinking leader’ who believes that everyone has an important role to play in the overall success of an organization. Hence, she is extremely grateful to be able to directly impact the lives of so many in this essential service in The Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

Assistant Commissioner McKenzie is an advocate for lifelong learning and is completing a Doctor of Education Degree. In 2014, ACP McKenzie completed a master’s degree in organizational Learning and Leadership from Barry University. She holds a bachelor’s and associate's in public administration from The College of The Bahamas. These degrees and other certifications have amalgamated her practical knowledge into a robust theoretical base.

ACP McKenzie is married and has two children. She is a woman of faith and a Methodist. She enjoys walking, researching, and listening to music in her spare time. Assistant Commissioner McKenzie is a systems thinker who lives by the philosophy that each individual is essential to the overall success of an organization.
