In 1986, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kenwood Taylor made a consequential decision to join the rank and file of the Royal Bahamas Police Force, almost one year after graduating from the R.M. Bailey Senior High School. This was at the height of criminality in The Bahamas due to the proliferation and transshipment of dangerous drugs.

His decision to join the Force was a noble and honorary one as he wanted to make a difference in the fight against crime. On completion of his recruitment program at the Police Training College, he was posted at the Southern Division where he quickly learned the fundamentals of station duties and procedures as well as good customer service. In addition, he fostered positive working relationships with the community and truly understood Sir Robert Peele’s concept that, “The police are the public and the public are the police.” He served at Southern Police Station for almost 2 years.

In 1988, his sterling character and exceptional work ethics caught the attention of his supervisors, and he was immediately vetted and transferred to the Security and Intelligence Branch. To be selected to serve in such an area, requires one to have integrity that is beyond reproach due to the serious nature of the assignment. A major part of SIB’s remit is to protect the lives of high ranking government officials and dignitaries while safeguarding confidential information. ACP Taylor served at SIB for 23 years.

On January 4, 2010 ACP Taylor entered the gazetted ranks as an Assistant Superintendent of Police and was transferred to the Grand Bahama and Northern Bahamas District. He served as 2nd in Command at the West End Police Division for 6 months. He was then transferred to the Central Division where he served as 2nd in Command.

On April 26, 2011 he was transferred to the Traffic Division as Officer in Charge, where he remained until 2017 when he was promoted to the rank of Superintendent. Accordingly, he held command of the Mobile Division for 2 consecutive years until his promotion to Chief Superintendent in 2020. He subsequently assumed command of operations for the island of Grand Bahama and later served as the Commander for Abaco and the Cays.

On July 23, 2021 ACP Taylor became a part of the Senior Executive Leadership Team as he was appointed Assistant Commissioner of Police. In his new mantle of leadership he assumed the portfolio with responsibility for the Family Islands District. In July 2022, he assumed the portfolio with responsibility for Crime Management and Criminal Investigations, which includes CID, Criminal Records, Financial Crimes and Forensic Science.

ACP Taylor is a highly decorated officer on the Force having received the Long Service and Good Conduct Award as well as the Award for Meritorious Service. To complement his experience, in 2007 he received international training at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Senior Police Administration (SPAC). He also attended the International Law Enforcement Academy in El Salvador where he completed the Law Enforcement Leadership Development Course which was designed to improve leadership, team building, and working with other regional countries to minimize transnational crimes.

ACP Taylor is married to Retired Ch. Superintendent Kimberley Taylor, and they are the proud parents of daughter, Kenria Ashley. ACP Kenwood Taylor remains committed to the oath of office he took some 38 years ago. He understands that crime takes a collective effort to gain a competitive advantage against existing criminality. He believes that it is paramount for every community from Great Inagua to Grand Bahama, including our law enforcement agencies and international partners, continue to work in synergy to create a safer Bahamas for generations to come.
