On Friday, March 2nd, 1973, Kirkwood J. Andrews was born on the island of New Providence. He began his educational journey at the Naomi Blatch Primary School, where he received a fundamental grounding in the belief that hard work pays off. He spent the latter years of his high school education at C. H. Reeves Secondary School, during which time he discovered his lifelong passion for serving others. In 1990, upon graduating, he joined the Royal Bahamas Police Force to pursue a career in law enforcement. Through dedication and a strong work ethic, he excelled throughout his professional career, and his youthful exuberance and commitment to excellence did not go unnoticed by his superiors.

Kirkwood received several promotions based on his contributions to the Royal Bahamas Police Force. He progressed through the ranks as follows: he became a Corporal in July 1998, a Sergeant in July 2001, an Inspector in July 2005, an Assistant Superintendent of Police in January 2010, a Superintendent of Police in October 2014, a Chief Superintendent of Police in January 2017, an Assistant Commissioner of Police in March 2020, and a Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police in December 2023. In addition to his promotions, Kirkwood Andrews was awarded the Medal for Meritorious Service in 2001, the Medal for Long Service and Good Conduct in 2009, and was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Merit by the Commonwealth of The Bahamas National Honours Act in 2023.

His desire for continuous self-development led him to pursue tertiary education. In 2012, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Nova Southeastern University. However, this achievement did not satisfy his appetite for knowledge. In 2016, he obtained a Master of Science in Police Leadership and Management from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom.

In addition to the aforementioned achievements, Kirkwood embraced opportunities for self-development and improvement in police leadership. He completed various training programs in the United States, Canada, and other countries around the globe. In April 2006, he attended the Senior Police Administration Course in Ottawa, Canada. In 2010, he participated in the Law Enforcement Management Development Program and the International Law Enforcement Academy in El Salvador. In 2017, he took part in the Leadership in Police Organization Course in Cedar City, Utah, USA. Additionally, in 2023, he completed the Executive Development in Policing Program at the Canadian Police College, Ottawa, Canada.

During his tenure, Kirkwood held positions at the Cable Beach Police Station, Grand Bahama District, and Financial Services, where he spent the majority of his service.

As the Officer in Charge of the Financial Services Division, Kirkwood had under his command the Police Stores, the Paul Farquharson Conference Centre, the Police Canteen and Messes, along with the Financial Services Section. His leadership among his staff was impactful, as he groomed the various ranks under his command to take on leadership roles.

Kirkwood is the proud father of three lovely daughters: Kirrice, Kyiesha, and Kayleigh Andrews.

Kirkwood’s mantra speaks volumes about his character:

“A boss creates fear, a leader creates confidence. A boss fixes blame, a leader corrects mistakes. A boss knows all; a leader asks questions. A boss does work in drudgery, and a leader makes it interesting. A boss is interested in himself, and a leader is more involved in the group.” - Russell H. Ewing
