THE VICTIM SUPPORT UNIT

People react to crime in many different ways. Although most victims don't suffer long term harm, both adults and children can be seriously affected. Victims of crime may need practical information and advice, or simply someone to talk to. Whereas, the Victim Support Unit aims and goals are to offer comprehensive services to all sections of the community and is committed to ensuring that Victims of serious crimes, minority and disadvantaged groups are welcomed and involved throughout the Police Force. The Unit aims to work for the rights of victims, witnesses and their families and for greater awareness of the effect of crime.

The Victim Support Unit Desk was launched at the Police Headquarters on August 29th 2007 by former Commissioner Paul H. Farquharson. He believed that as an organization we should be concerned about ensuring that the rights of citizens are protected. Therefore the unit comprises of trained individuals who are empathetic to victims and their family needs, providing free support for victims of any crime in a confidential environment.

The Unit has been classified as one of the most sensitive areas of the Royal Bahamas Police Force, mainly because of the nature of circumstances that presently exist in our country today, such as Rape, Incest, Child Abuse, Domestic Violence, and Homicide. Whereas, it is key that both officers and volunteers are proactive and not reactive to the needs of it’s victims.

The Unit’s objectives are to provide comprehensive services to all areas of the community and is committed to working for the rights of victims, witnesses and their families. Therefore, the unit along with its volunteers are responsible for responding to the individual needs of victims. By do so, it provides

  • Emotional support and reassurance
  • Counseling
  • Advice

The overall responsibility and focus of the Unit is to be proactive concerning domestic complaint, incidents of rape, fatal traffic accidents and homicide cases.
