Rochelle Deleveaux

Chief Superitendent of Police

The Beginning

Chief Superintendent Rochelle Lynette Deleveaux, is a graduate of Government High School. She always nurtured aspirations of having a career in the scientific field and enrolled at Acadia University in Nova Scotia Canada in pursuit of an undergraduate degree.

After completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Chemistry at Acadia University in 1993. She returned home to make a decision pertaining to her future unsure of whether to continue her studies or embark on a career. While pondering she heard about the Police Force’s Forensic Science Laboratory and completed a tour of the facility. She made the decision to pursue Forensic Science as a career. Chief Superintendent therefore enlisted in the Royal Bahamas Police Force on July 1, 1994.

In December 1994, after almost six months of rigorous training, Chief Superintendent Deleveaux graduated from the Police Training College receiving the ‘Baton of Honour’ for ‘A’ Squad 1994. She was then posted to the Southern Police Station (now the Southern Division), Market and Quakoo Streets. While attached to Southern Police Station she was exposed to various station duties and was the Computer Terminal Operator for her ‘guard’. Her experiences at this Station were that firm foundation upon which her career in Forensic Science was built.

Subsequently, in September 1995, she was transferred to the Forensic Science Laboratory (now Scientific Support Services) and began an intensive in-house training program. Upon successfully completing the training program in mid 1997 she became an analyst, specializing in Forensic Biology. It was at that time she began giving forensic testimony of her findings in our Supreme and Magistrates Courts.

Higher Education

After a personal introspection in 1999 Chief Superintendent Deleveaux concluded that expanding her knowledge in forensic science would make her a better forensic scientist. She then applied for and was awarded a coveted British Chevening Scholarship by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the British Government to undertake studies towards a Master of Science degree in Forensic Science (Biology) at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Scotland. During the course of study she undertook a research project at the Forensic Science Service (FSS) Laboratory in Huntington Cambridge, United Kingdom. She presented her research findings as a requirement for successful completion of the Master of Science (MSc.) degree in Forensic Science from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland.

Upon completion of her studies at the University of Strathclyde in September 2000 Chief Superintendent Deleveaux returned to the Forensic Science Laboratory, where she was tasked with assisting in training new analysts in the Biology Unit. She took her duties of trainer seriously and as a result has been instrumental in the training of all Biologists in the Biology Section since that time.

Over the course of her career in forensics Chief Superintendent Deleveaux’s analytical contribution on many high profile serious crimes has been invaluable and her testimony in Courts has resulted in numerous convictions for some of the Bahamas’ most notorious crimes.

Chief Superintendent Deleveaux is passionate about Forensics and takes seriously the responsibility of applying science to the purposes of the Law in the Bahamas.

In January 2022 she was transferred to the Tourism Police Division (TPD) as Office In Charge. During her tenure at TPD, she successfully guided that Division’s policing strategies in the rapidly changing downtown landscape that saw the completion of construction of the ‘state of the art’ Nassau Cruise Port (heralding the dramatic increase to the number of annual cruise visitor arrivals to the Bahamas) in conjunction with the ongoing extensive Downtown Revitalization project, the official visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the inaugural visit of the world’s largest cruise ship at that time, Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas.

After two years at the helm of TPD, in January 2024 she returned to Scientific Support Services once again as Director.

Chief Superintendent Deleveaux is the proud mother of one son, who is the” ember of her internal fire”. She enjoys reading, exercising, relaxing with friends and attending her son’s extra-curricular activities, especially soccer matches.

Awards

In March 2017 Chief Superintendent Deleveaux was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Awards as well as the Meritorious Service Medal.

Commendations

Chief Superintendent Deleveaux has a Commendation from the Commissioner of Police conferred for her exceptional performance during the investigation into the homicide of a foreign national in Sandy Point Abaco in 2002 with the suspect being convicted as a result in July 2004.
